To guide us in financial stewardship, God commanded tithing. Tithing is giving 10% of our earnings to the Church. Those earnings may come from one or many jobs, investments, interest payments, social security, pension, unemployment, disability, child support, alimony, lottery winnings, inheritance, or gifts. However God blesses us financially. God instructs us to give a portion of it to the Church so that the Church may function. Tithing is the most equitable way for giving. Stewardship-derived from the root word “steward”-is the proper managements, utilization, and development of the resources given. Christian Stewardship is the acknowledgement of God’s divine provisions and our response to Jesus’ redeeming grace through a life of giving and the proper management of God’s resources. It is about commitment, relationship, and covenant with God as sacrificial, sacramental (sacred), and sharing. 17 after Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Genesis 14:17-20
Tithing as a lifestyle means the giving of a tenth of everything we have and everything we are---time, talent, and treasure, as minimum gifts of worship, praise and thanksgiving to God, after we have given ourselves to the Lord. All that we have and all that we are belong to God. When we receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, we consciously, joyfully, and willfully acknowledge, surrender, and commit all that we are and all that we have to God. Tithing establishes the foundation, the floor, and the minimum gifts of worship, praise, and service from which we grow to even greater giving, service, and sacrifice.
Tithing as a lifestyle involves time, talent, and treasure, but we will be emphasizing on financial giving as part of our worship through stewardship. Many believers stumble over, struggle with, rebel against, and refuse to surrender to the giving of money because we are so attached to it and attempt to bargain with God in this thing we “love.” Many don’t have a problem tithing their time or talent, but their struggle and resistance comes with tithing money. (See Matthew 23:23)
The Bible teaches us that all resources belong to God, and all things come from God. We have a duty to freely give support to the Lord’s church, and His ministries through the church.
Genesis 28:2-22
Leviticus 27:30-32
Deuteronomy 12:4-7
Malachi 2:8-10
Scripture teaches us that those who have financial resources bear a responsibility to be generous in sharing it:
Malachi 6:10; Matthew 6:19-20; Matthew 25:14; Luke 19:8; 1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 9:7; 1 Timothy 6:17-19
Stewardship begins with the individual as we allow the Lord into all aspects of our lives. We should tithe to the Church and to ourselves; 10% to the church and 10% to our savings accounts. This is good stewardship as we invest in God’s kingdom as the church community and the living church we are.
