The foundation of African Methodism has been in place since the printing of the first The Doctrine and Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Throughout our illustrious history and rich Methodist tradition, the role of a steward has been consistent with very little alteration.
• Church attendance – It is our prayer that we continue to see a steady increase in our overall church attendance. While we have had a consistent 95% of our officers regularly attending Church School and bible study, we have set our goal for 100% participation.• Financially – As believers and followers of Christ we continue pressing toward our goal of being a 100% tithing church. Tithes continue to lead all categories of giving.•
Evangelism and Worship – Our Stewards have established themselves as Worship Leaders for all worship services.
When the church at Thessalonica was just a small fellowship, Paul urged the members of the church to learn the officers. He wanted them to do so because they were instructed to take their spiritual concerns to these leaders. Paul made it clear that persons who were leaders in the church were there by appointment of the Lord. Parts of their duties were to admonish, confront, comfort, support, and show patience (1 Thessalonians 5:12-22). Stewards in the local church are charged with some of the same duties. Serving in a spiritual capacity carries some weighty responsibilities. This is why the AME Church established the following qualifications for those who serve as stewards in the 2004 Discipline:• A steward must be a person of solid piety who knows and loves the Word of God and Doctrine.• A steward must be fruitful and of good natural or acquired ability to transact the spiritual and temporal business of the church.• A steward must have been an active member of the AME Church for at least two years.

The Pastor presides over and appoints the Board of Steward members annually. The Presiding Elder at the First Quarterly Conference confirms the Board. This group is responsible for the overall needs of the Local Church: finances, Pastor and the general welfare of its members. The Stewards also assist the pastor in delivering communion to the sick and shut-in members of the church. The pastor appoints a president pro tempore in his/her absence.
